Vicki Buchda, Vice President of Care Improvement, Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA), is the recipient of the 2023 Contexture Excellence Award – Leader. This award is presented to someone who symbolizes leadership through the use of health information technology, and Vicki embodies this leadership through her efforts to spearhead collaboratives that improve patient safety and reduce harm in hospitals, enhancing the overall patient experience while providing decreased costs to all Arizonians.
Vicki’s experience across various healthcare roles — from leading nursing teams in clinical settings to overseeing technical teams across major healthcare systems such as Mayo Clinic, Hawaii Pacific Health and Banner Health — has made her a vital Arizona resource, especially through her dedication to advancing the Arizona Healthcare Directives Registry (AzHDR) Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA) Rural Hospital Incentive Program. Her team has worked diligently with Contexture to increase AzHDR utilization through training on advanced care planning with a focus on how rural hospitals can best implement advanced directive workflows.
“Here in Arizona, we are beginning to flip the script on conversations surrounding end-of-life care, and it’s because of champions like Vicki Buchda who has not only dedicated herself to a career in healthcare but also in public policy spaces,” shared Carla Sutter, Senior Healthcare Directives Operations Mgr. of Contexture. “Vicki brings stakeholders together throughout the state, and the collaboration, training and education that Vicki and her team provide on advance directive workflows, thoughtful conversations and Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) documents have increased the confidence of trained staff so that they can have these compassionate conversations.
Vicki has also participated in efforts at both the state and national levels which have raised awareness and improvement of the quality of end-of-life care in Arizona. I want to thank Vicki for her diligence, compassion and innovation. She is a true leader and community champion.”
