The Information Blocking Rule implements a requirement of the 21st Century Cures Act, which prohibits healthcare providers, health information technology, developers, health information networks and health information exchanges (HIEs) from impermissibly interfering with the access, exchange or use of electronic health information (EHI).*

*Note: The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) published the Information Blocking Final Rule on May 1, 2020. The Information Blocking Rule (45 C.F.R. Part 171) went into effect on June 30, 2020. The compliance deadline, originally scheduled for November 2, 2020, was extended to April 5, 2021.
