What is an eConsult?
An eConsult is an asynchronous physician-to-physician conversation between a primary care provider (PCP) and specialist to aid patient treatment. The PCP signs into a web-based platform, pulls up the patient’s information and asks the question. The specialists review the case and respond with additional questions or their recommendation.
Example Workflow
- The patient presents with a medical issue that may benefit from a specialist’s guidance.
- PCP educates the patient on the benefits and possible risks associated with using an eConsult and gains their consent.
- Submit relevant:
- Medical history
- Labs or other test results
- The clinical question
- The specialist reviews the submitted information and provides a detailed response, which may include:
- Additional questions
- Clinical recommendation
- The PCP reviews the specialist’s response, asks any follow-up questions, or closes the eConsult.
Benefits of an eConsult
These physician-to-physician consultations allow you to collaborate directly with specialists to determine the next steps in patient care.
Why Use eConsults?
- Receive expert knowledge in hours—not weeks
- Reduce unnecessary referrals and in-person visits
- Enhance patient satisfaction
- Reduce patient costs (travel expenses, missed workdays, etc.)
Use eConsults to:
- Explore new diagnoses (e.g., new-onset seizures)
- Manage current conditions (e.g., cirrhosis management)
- Confirm clinical decisions (e.g., assess the need for allergy testing)
Common Topics Addressed via eConsults
Documentation of Conversation
All CSCC eConsult’s are captured in their entirety to be loaded into the patient’s longitudinal record.
You maintain the treatment authority of the issue and next steps because the patient does not establish a doctor-patient relationship with the specialist.
Current specialties available to provide an eConsult
You can connect with experts in the following specialties:
Adult
Allergy, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, ENT/Otolaryngology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Hepatology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Neurology, Obesity Medicine, OB/GYN, Oncology (Medical), Orthopedics, Pain Management, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Rheumatology, Urology
Pediatric
Allergy, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, ENT/Otolaryngology, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Urology
In the system, adult and pediatric specialties appear as separate options.
When a specialty supports both populations, it will be listed twice—once for adults and once for pediatrics.
